Tool to remove hinge pin on VW beetle

Posted by Carl King - 15/02/09 at 08:02 pm
Here is very creative tool that made light work of removing the hinge pin on a VW Beetle. This came from a gentleman that bought our 68 VW bug and he has been sending us progress updates ever since. He’s retired so has the time and experience to do very meticulous work. He’s really done a beautiful job on the car and this email is about the second VW bug he has started on since he finished the 68 VW.

A Upper hinge pin removal so passenger side mirror can be installed.  Everyone on the Internet says what a hard job it is, so I took there word for it and applied penetrating oil every day for a week.  Next I tried using a HFH and a punch and quickly realized that would not work.  So Harbor Freight to the rescue.  I bought a 5 dollar C clamp and made a tool to remove the rusted hinge.  First I removed the nickel size piece in the end of the screw and sized the end of the screw to fit into a 3/8″ socket. Second I broke out my Harbor Freight wire welder and welded a bolt on the none adjustable end of the clamp.  After grinding down the top I put the clamp on the hinge with the adjusting screw up.  I tightened the clamp as tight as I could and hit upward on the clamp with that same HFH and the hinge popped up.  Victory at last.  I believe the penetrating oil was very instrumental in the process.
