Metal rescue strips a 64 Impala parking lamp

12th March 2010 by Carl King No Comments

This past fall when I went to Fall Carlisle I ran into the metal rescue crew and gave them a rusty 64 Impala parking lamp to test. It was pretty badly pitted and even had holes in it.

Here’s some video they shot when I came back to pick it up.

A good deal on 64 Impala seat springs

11th March 2010 by Carl King No Comments

I got a really good deal on a set of new 64 Impala seat springs. They arrived about a week ago.

I answered a Craigslist ad and the guy selling them has a classic car and muscle car restoration shop in California. They were left over from a project he did last year and they were sitting in the corner gathering dust. He only wanted a bit more than 1/2 of the price new, so it was a smoking deal.

I wasn’t planning on getting new springs, but for the price I couldn’t turn ‘em down.

This is just the most recent deal I’ve found. I’ve spent about $3000 in the last 2 years on chevy restoration parts and I’ve only paid full price for one thing,… a side view mirror I picked up last year at Spring Carlisle.

So, now I have 2 sets of 64 Impala bucket seats. I’ll do a how to video on restoring one set the old fashioned way, by replacing individual zig-zag springs and the other set by replacing the springs with this set of new seat springs.

Look for that later this year.

You can find a lot of chevy restoration parts online for a good price. Over the last couple of years I’ve picked up a lot of new chevy restoration parts just like these 64 Impala bucket seat springs.

The trick is knowing how to find them without spending a week of your evenings online searching for them.

If you signup for the Impala Project newsletter you’ll get a series of articles over the next few weeks. The last one in the 7 week series will explain how I pulled it off in only an hour on every other Monday morning.

Spring is right around the corner and people start getting rid of excess parts laying around their garage, basement or shop.

In my experience it will start soon, around the middle to end of April.

No time to lose, so save your parts money.

64 Impala front disc brake conversion

27th February 2010 by Carl King No Comments

I got my 64 Impala front disc brake conversion kit today. As soon as the weather improves and I can take the 64 Ghia vert out of the garage, I’ll have room to get started.

This disc brake conversion kit is pretty simple. I got it from http://www.scarebird.com . They have a beta program I’m participating in where I get a copy of the prototypes to install on my 64 Impala for testing.

The kit is pretty simple. They send you the instructions, new backing plates cut out of heavy steel plate, and a list of the parts you should use to complete the setup. It makes use of factory original GM parts so I would use the master cylinder, caliper, hoses and other fittings based on what they used in testing.

It allows you to keep using your factory spindle which a lot of other kits force you to replace.

Gonna order the parts tomorrow.
